{"id":617,"date":"2012-06-13T09:36:30","date_gmt":"2012-06-13T09:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mappingpetersburg.org\/site\/?p=617"},"modified":"2012-06-13T09:36:30","modified_gmt":"2012-06-13T09:36:30","slug":"a-note-on-icons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mappingpetersburg.org\/site\/?p=617","title":{"rendered":"A note on icons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have now finished upgrading the maps to use a new set of icons, provided by <a title=\"Map Icons by Nicolas Mollet\" href=\"http:\/\/mapicons.nicolasmollet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Mollet<\/a> under a <a title=\"CC BY-SA 3 license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\/\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finding decent icons, ones that are both attractive and functional &#8211; easy on the eye, standing out from the background map, numbered, and neither too large or too small &#8211; has been quite a challenge. Google&#8217;s standard set is limited and quite frankly ugly, and the few others we found were also lacking in some way. But with Mollet&#8217;s range, this is no longer a problem. Not only are they comprehensive (<a title=\"Map icon for gumball machines\" href=\"http:\/\/mapicons.nicolasmollet.com\/markers\/stores\/food-drink\/gumballs\/\" target=\"_blank\">gumball machines!<\/a>), but they come in a number of styles, in a wide range of colours (over 16 million shades available), and numbered up to 300.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, by virtue of an open license, they can be freely used, adapted and re-used.<\/p>\n<p>To Nicolas we say, Thanks and Za zdorov&#8217;e!<\/p>\n<p>(There seems to be a problem with the icons being slightly distorted on the maps; it&#8217;s on the to-fix list.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have now finished upgrading the maps to use a new set of icons, provided by Nicolas Mollet under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license.
